Of Mice and Men quiz

1. What do you think will happen after George killed Lennie?

I think that George would tell everybody that he killed Lennie, and also his dream would not come true, which is live in the barn and have a better life. George would leave the barn to find another better life

2. What do you think of people killed Candy’s dog? What would you do if you were Candy?

I think it was sad that people killed his dog, because his dog just like his relative, that with him all the time, Candy was a old man, and he doesn’t have family in the barn, his dog was just like his son that he can takes care of. If I’m Candy, I would not let them killed my dog, I would talk to them that the dog was just like my son, what would you feel if I kill your son.

3. What question would you ask George?
I would ask George why he killed Lennie? I would like to him that because I really want to know why he killed Lennie, although Lennie did something that he was not suppose to do, but how can you kill a person that was always with you, just like your brother.

4. How is this movie similar to Native Son?
I think this book is kind of similar to Native Son, but not all. I think Lennie killed Curly’s wife is similar to Native Son because they all have to deal with crime.

5. What do you think was the turning point of this book?

I think the turning point would be when Lennie killed Curley’s wife, because everything changed at that time. In the beginning of the story everything went fine, but when Lennie killed Curly’s wife, Lennie was scared and at the end George killed Lennie

6. Could this happen in the world today?

It might happen today because there is many people have their dreams and people can do anything for their dreams.

7. What factor would you change if you were George looking for Lennie?

If I’m George looking for Lennie I won’t kill Lennie, I would escape with Lennie, go to another place to find our dream.

8. What do you think George felt after he killed Lennie?

I think he would be sad because he doesn’t want to kill Lennie.

9. Imagine what would happen if Curly find Lennie?

I think if Curly find Lennie, he would kill Lennie, because Curly doesn’t like Lennie, and they both have some problems with each other.

10. What do you think about the ending?

I think the ending was sad because at the end George killed Lennie, they were best friends just like brothers. But George killed Lennie because Lennie killed Curly’s wife.
I think the reason George killed Lennie was because he doesn’t want Curly find Lennie, Curly would bring Lennie back to the farm and kill him.

American dream

What is an American dream? I think an American dream is a way to make life better, to work more harder. There are many people around me had different American dreams, some people wants to get more money so they can have a better life, some people wants to challenge a different life, and some people just want more freedom. But anyway, what they do is for life.

Have you ever read the book Of Mice and Men? If you wonder about what is an American dream, you got to read this book. This is a book that talks about people and their “American Dream”.

In this book, there are many different dreams. George and Lennie, their dreams were simple. George is an intelligent guy who takes care of Lennie, and he dreams of a better life, have a farm, a peace place to live. Lennie is an intellectually disabled man who travels with George, all he dreams about is to tend the rabbits and live with George happy ever after.

Curley’s wife also had a dream, too. Curley’s wife wants to become a dancer/actress. Her dream is different from George and Lennie’s, her dream was not that simple, her dream had to work so hard so that she can become famous, but she never did. How can you become a famous person? You need to use men so you can get your dreams come true, which Curley’s wife did. She lived in a barn and she was the only woman in the barn, which had nobody to talk to, she was lonely, all she wants is to do is to talk to people about how she feels. But at finally, Lennie killed her, and her dream never come true.

In conclusion, everyone has their own American dream, but in order to let your dream come true, you have to know what’s your dream. The book ‘Of Mice and Men’ has a lot of examples of different American dreams.

Service Learning

Last Thursday, we had a meeting, we talked about what we going to do for the ice cream sale. We finally decided that the date would be May 21th, 2008. Mrs. Madhi assigned us to bring supplies for the ice cream sale, such as water ice, ice cream sandwiches, napkins, cups, spoons, etc. And I will bring small cups for the water ice. Everything cost a dollar, we were thinking about to get two different size of water ice, and the small one cost a dollar, the large one cost two dollars. But we said that people might not get the large one because it cost too much, there will be many people buy the small one water ice. So we will only get the small one that cost a dollar.

Service Learning

Last Friday, we had an ice cream sale in the school. During the 30 minutes lunchtime, we made approximately $100. We are planning to have another ice cream sale for the coming week. Mrs. Madhi assigned people to create posters during the meeting for the sale, and we talked about what do we need for the next ice cream sale.

Service learning reflection

Last week, we received an E-mail from the C.H.O.P and we discussed about the "Wish List". The Wish List had a list of stuffs about what they need, such as toys, CD players, phone/phone cards, books, etc. Basically, we think they asked for too much, the Wish List was like one page long, we doesn't have enough money to buy these things, so we decided to sell ice cream sandwiches, water ice, and pretzels in the school so we can get money to buy books and toys for them. We try to buy everything from the Wish List. We will begin to sell these thing on May 9th, which is Friday, and  Tanaya's birthday. For the next meeting, I think we will discuss about where to get the food and who's going to get these. I think the meeting was successful because we got a lot of things done!

Service learning last Thursday

During our meeting last Thursday, we discussed about what we want to do. Some people want to do C.H.O.P( Children's hospital of Philadelphia) and other people want to do the homeless shelter. We decided to breaking down into two groups. We was thinking about maybe break-off into two groups or do the C.H.O.P first and then we do the homeless shelter. Mrs. Madhi received a letter from C.H.O.P., and we watched a video clip from C.H.O.P. website that has information about C.H.O.P.
We got a lot done last Thursday.
We decided what we going to do.
Below is the address of the video we watched during our meeting on Thursday.

Gene Mutation- Bio

A gene is essentially a sentence made up of the bases A, T, G, and C that describes how to make a protein. Any changes to those instructions can alter the gene's meaning and change the protein that is made, or how or when a cell makes that protein. There are many different ways to alter a gene, just as there are many different ways to introduce typos into a sentence. In the following examples of some types of mutations, we use the sentence "The fat cat ate the wee rat" as a sample gene:
Point Mutation
A point mutation is a simple change in one base of the gene sequence. This is equivalent to changing one letter in a sentence, such as this example, where we change the 'c' in cat to an 'h':

Original
The fat cat ate the wee rat.

Point Mutation The fat hat ate the wee rat.

Frame-shift mutation
Frame-shift mutations. In a frame shift mutation, one or more bases are inserted or deleted, the equivalent of adding or removing letters in a sentence. But because our cells read DNA in three letter "words", adding or removing one letter changes each subsequent word. This type of mutation can make the DNA meaningless and often results in a shortened protein. An example of a frame-shift mutation using our sample sentence is when the 't' from cat is removed, but we keep the original letter spacing:

Original
The fat cat ate the wee rat.

Frame Shift The fat caa tet hew eer at.

Deletion
Mutations that result in missing DNA are called deletions. These can be small, such as the removal of just one "word," or longer deletions that affect a large number of genes on the chromosome. Deletions can also cause frameshift mutations. In this example, the deletion eliminated the word cat.

Original
The fat cat ate the wee rat.

Deletion The fat ate the wee rat.

Insertion
Mutations that result in the addition of extra DNA are called insertions. Insertions can also cause frameshift mutations, and general result in a nonfunctional protein.

Original
The fat cat ate the wee rat.

Insertion The fat cat xlw ate the wee rat.

Inversion
In an inversion mutation, an entire section of DNA is reversed. A small inversion may involve only a few bases within a gene, while longer inversions involve large regions of a chromosome containing several genes.

Original
The fat cat ate the wee rat.
Insertion The fat tar eew eht eta tac.

DNA expression mutation
There are many types of mutations that change not the protein itself but where and how much of a protein is made. These types of changes in DNA can result in proteins being made at the wrong time or in the wrong cell type. Changes can also occur that result in too much or too little of the protein being made

NHD Reflection

Vietnam War
Documentary
Amie S., Chengxian Z.

My topic was about Vietnam War. I learned a lot while doing this such as how the war started, conflict and compromise, and why the United States got involved. Why the United States got involved was basically what we focus on. Some people think that it was wrong that the United States sent troops to support the Vietnam because it caused more people and the soldiers doesn't know what they fought for. After finished this project, I have more knowledge about the Vietnam War.

Working with partners was all fine, but I was mad because 2 of my partners doesn’t do nothing. I was mad at that time but now its over and we done with this project. I gave up in the last minute, I thought my documentary was a mess and I didn’t want to work on it anymore, but Amie still working on it and I think the documentary was better that before.

Some challenges like the interview. The interview was pretty good, but the problem was that the sound was not clear. And the guy that we interview talked too much and it doesn’t fit into our questions. We were sad about it. Another problem was that doing a documentary and have to stay after school. Last time I stayed after school until almost 7:00PM, and I was worried about that my parents would call my grandma. So I called my parents to China.

I think I will do a paper next year, because I can’t work with a partner who don’t do nothing, I’m tired of doing things in the last minute. Doing a documentary has to stay in the school and do it. Its more easier than documentary.

Which is dirtier? The septa rails or the school bathroom’s doorknob?

Anyea Jewett & Cheng-Xian Zheng Date: 1/10/08

ABSTRACT
The reason my partner and I chose this project was because we really wanted to see which was dirtier. (Septa rails or school door knobs) the reason for this is because we use these things everyday. We touch the door knobs in order to open the door to use the rest room and it is touched by so many people a day. The septa rails are also touched so many times a day. By different people and some times we are forced to touch them when the train is crowded and you need to keep balance. So we decided to test them both and see which is the dirtier.

Question: which is dirtier the septa rails or the school bathrooms door knob?

Hypothesis: the rails on a septa train will be dirtier than the school door handle because the train is open to the public and more people are exposed to it and touch it than the school’s bathroom so the septa rail will be dirtier.

Materials
. Agar dishes
. Cotton swabs
. Septa rails
. Doorknobs
. Plastic sandwich bags
. Refrigerator
. Incubator

Procedures:
1. Open agar dish
2. Open cotton swab
3. Take cotton swab and rub across the surface of the septa rail
4. Rub the cotton swab across the surface of the agar dish
5. Close agar dish and place inside a sandwich bag upside down. And label.
6. Store in refrigerator
7. Open second agar dish
8. Open second cotton swab
9. Rub the doorknob with the cotton swab
10. Rub the surface of the agar dish with the cotton swab
11. Close and wrap in a plastic bag and place in refrigerator.
12. Repeat procedures one more time for both the septa rails and doorknobs for a total of 4-agar dishes 2 septa 2 school.

Dish Number of bacterial colonies
Septa dish 1 404
Septa dish 2 197
School dish 1 180
School dish 2 280

Observations: during our experiment, I realized after the dishes were placed in the incubator the dishes had a number of bacterial colonies scattered across the surface of them. They looked like little tiny “balls” almost. I also noticed that the same bacteria that was on the Septa dish was the same on the one that was on the one for school. It was cool really. The only hard part was having to count each and every bacteria “ball” one by one.

Conclusion: In conclusion the hypothesis was correct. The rails on a septa handle are dirtier than the doorknob at school. The septa rails tended to have more bacterial colonies found than the ones for school. They had bigger numbers. For instance the septa rail one had 404 colonies, and the school doorknob 1 had 180. The septa rail had 224 more bacteria than the doorknob dish. And septa dish 2 had 280 colonies and the school dish 2 had 180 so that’s a 100-colony difference. So over all the septa rails are dirtier.

Vietnam War

My topic for NHD project this year is Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War. The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U.S history. From 1946 until1954, Vietnam struggled for their independence from France. In September 2nd, 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam was independent from France. After they fought with France, they divided into South and the North. The North Vietnam came under the control of Vietnamese Communists who had opposed France and who aimed for a unified Vietnam under Communist rule. The South was controlled by the Vietnamese who had collaborated with the French. The Vietnam War was happened between the North Vietnam and the South Vietnam during the year 1959 and 1975. It was a classic example of Cold War conflict. The North Vietnam and the South Vietnam was fighting for democracy. In the 1950s, the United States involved in this war began to send troops to the South Vietnam to support them fighting the North. During the Vietnam War, some countries in Asia had also involved in this war, Such as China, Korea, Laos, Cambodia. China involved in the Vietnam War began in 1949 when the communists took over the country. The Communist Party of China provided material and technical support to the North Vietnam. China. China sent anti-aircraft units and engineering battalions to North Vietnam to repair the damage caused by American bombing, rebuild roads, railroads and to perform other engineering works. Korea sent a fighter squadron to North Vietnam to back up the North Vietnamese 921st and 923rd fighter squadrons defending Hanoi.
The conflict is the South and the North Vietnam fighting each other, and the U.S.A involved in this war. Many people dead during this war. The compromise is that finally the United States left Vietnam in 1975. The North Vietnam won the war, resulting in the unification of Vietnam under the communist government of the North
During this war, The South Vietnam had 250,000 people dead, 1,170,000 people wounded. The North Vietnam had 1,100,000 people dead/missing. The United States had 58,209 people dead*, 2,000 people missing, 305,000 people wounded. China has 1,446 people dead, 4,200 people wounded. In addition to another 1.5 million Lao and Cambodians who were drawn into the war.
The reason why I chose this topic because the Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U.S history. So many people dead in the war. And also I want to know more about the Vietnam War.
